The Human Factor

Craig's Story

I'm driving home late at night and there in the middle of the road is a dead possum. I think, "OK, I'm gonna move it to the side of the road." As I drive past to pull over I notice all these little tufts of fur on the road. Well, those are her babies and they're all dead, looks almost like someone made a point to do it.

I go to move the mother first, picking her up by her feet. Out of the pouch comes this one last little baby, not more than 4 inches long, hissin' at me with its mouth open like it's gonna take me on. Her mother had given her life for this baby. If it wasn't for her larger body getting hit by the cars first this baby would be dead too. So I empty my shirt pocket and pop this little kid in. Right away this kid was warm. I could feel it against my skin. Good sign.

So I gathered up the whole damn family in a box and took 'em home. Dead ones in the ground, Carnation Infant Formula via eye dropper for the little girl.

And there she is getting all grown up. Sometimes I'd be sitting in a chair and she'd walk out of her bed and up on my lap and go to sleep. Yeah, I fell in love with her big time.

This picture was taken when I knew I was going to give her away the next day. You see, some people who are now good friends were looking for a little girl just like her and the Spirit that moves all things made sure we met.
